Article 2.2: Part-time faculty are considered members of the Bargaining Unit if they are employed for 20 percent (20%) or more of a full-time faculty load in a semester or 20 percent (20%) or more lecture equivalent hours in a semester. This specifically excludes all other casual, intermittent, and non-contract lecturers.
Article 3.3: “Part-time faculty” member refers to any individual academic part-time employee of the District for not more than sixty-seven percent (67%) of a full-time assignment (average load over one year) who is covered by the terms and provisions of this Agreement.
Article 22.3.6: Part-time faculty members shall not exceed 67% of the load in any term without prior approval of the VP of Academic Affairs (per EDC §87482.5).
Article 19.A.1: This article outlines Gavilan College's structured evaluation process for part-time faculty, detailing the frequency, components, timeline, team composition, and procedural requirements throughout a faculty member's employment cycle. Read the entire article for details. Here is the basic part-time faculty evaluation structure:
First semester: Evaluation by area Dean or assigned dean
Third semester: Evaluation by a Trained Faculty Observer (TFO) selected by the faculty member
After earning rehire rights: Evaluations every six semesters by a TFO
Additional evaluations may be conducted at the district's discretion in any semester.
Article 19.A.3: Outlines remediation process for part-time faculty receiving unsatisfactory evaluations.

Article 16.4.1: This article establishes re-appointment rights for part-time faculty members who have taught at least four (4) semesters with two (2) most recent positive evaluations.

Load Limitations: California Education Code does not allow part-time faculty to teach more than 67% of a full-time instructor's load in any one community college district.
Compensation: Part-time faculty are paid to teach, counsel, or serve as librarians. For instruction, this includes preparation, class time, and assessment of student work. Any work outside these "primary duties" must involve additional compensation.
Office Hours Program: Education Code sections 87880-87885 establish the Community College Part-Time Faculty Office Hours Program. Part-time faculty participating in the program must be compensated for at least one office hour for every two or more classes taught per week or 40% of the district-defined full-time load.
Academic Senate for California Community Colleges Part-Time Faculty Committee: The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) Part-time Faculty Committee provides recommendations on academic and professional matters affecting part-time faculty members.
